Eastern red cedar
Juniperus virginiana L.
Also called eastern red cedar.
Tough native juniper for dry, poor and alkaline soils. Female trees bear blue berry-like cones that feed winter birds.
Size over time
Typical landscape size 9–15 m (30–49 ft) tall and 3–6 m (10–20 ft) wide; medium growth, about 25 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.25) from the #15 install size.
Design notes
- Alternate host of cedar-apple rust; keep away from apples and susceptible crabapples.
- Narrow cultivars suit tight screens; species seedlings vary in form.

Native status describes where the species occurs naturally. It is not a promise that it suits a particular garden; site conditions decide that.
