Eastern white pine

Pinus strobus L.

Also called eastern white pine, white pine.

Soft-needled native pine that grows quickly into a tall, layered tree. Widely used for screening, though it loses lower limbs with age.

Size over time

Typical landscape size 15–24 m (49–79 ft) tall and 6–12 m (20–39 ft) wide; fast growth, about 15 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.45) from the #15 install size.

Design notes

  • Very sensitive to road salt spray and ozone; keep away from salted roads.
  • Poor in heavy clay and alkaline soils.
  • Deer browse young trees heavily.
