Dwarf Alberta spruce
Picea glauca‘Conica’ (Moench) Voss
Also called dwarf Alberta spruce.
Tight, cone-shaped dwarf spruce with dense fine needles. Used as a formal accent in foundations and containers.
Size over time
Typical landscape size 2–4 m (7–13 ft) tall and 1–2 m (3–7 ft) wide; slow growth, about 35 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.12) from the #7 install size.
Design notes
- Spider mites brown the inner foliage in hot, dry, reflected sites.
- Prune out any reverted fast-growing shoots.
- Winter burn on the south side in exposed sites; screen from winter sun and wind.
Regions
Native range: Boreal North America, south to northern New England and New York (species).
Native to these OpenLandscape3D pilot regions:
Native status describes where the species occurs naturally. It is not a promise that it suits a particular garden; site conditions decide that.
