Pennsylvania sedge

Carex pensylvanica Lam.

Also called oak sedge.

Soft, fine-textured native sedge that forms a low, lawn-like mat in dry shade under trees. Can be left unmown or mown high.

Size over time

Typical landscape size 0.2–0.3 m (0–1 ft) tall and 0.2–0.3 m (1 ft) wide; medium growth, about 3 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.25) from the plug install size.

Design notes

  • Plant plugs 20–30 cm apart; fills in over 2–3 years.
  • Not for foot traffic or wet soil.
