Green Giant arborvitae
Thuja standishii × plicata‘Green Giant’
Fast, large hybrid arborvitae for tall privacy screens. More heat-tolerant and less browsed by deer than eastern arborvitae.
Size over time
Typical landscape size 9–15 m (30–49 ft) tall and 3–5 m (10–16 ft) wide; fast growth, about 15 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.45) from the #15 install size.
Design notes
- Gets wide — space 1.5–2.5 m apart for a screen and keep 2 m from fences.
- Replaces Leyland cypress in many screens where canker is a problem.
Regions
Native range: Garden hybrid of Japanese and western red cedars.
Not recorded as native to any of the three pilot regions.
Native status describes where the species occurs naturally. It is not a promise that it suits a particular garden; site conditions decide that.
