Yoshino Japanese cedar
Cryptomeria japonica‘Yoshino’ (Thunb. ex L.f.) D.Don
Also called Japanese cryptomeria.
Fast, soft-textured conifer with reddish shredding bark. A reliable large screen for the upper South and mild Northeast.
Size over time
Typical landscape size 9–15 m (30–49 ft) tall and 4–8 m (13–26 ft) wide; fast growth, about 15 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.45) from the #15 install size.
Design notes
- Foliage bronzes in cold winters and greens again in spring.
- Better disease record in the Southeast than Leyland cypress.
Regions
Native range: Japan and China.
Not recorded as native to any of the three pilot regions.
Native status describes where the species occurs naturally. It is not a promise that it suits a particular garden; site conditions decide that.
