Eastern redbud
Cercis canadensis L.
Also called eastern redbud, redbud.
Small understory tree whose bare branches turn magenta-pink in early spring, followed by heart-shaped leaves. Good under taller trees and at woodland edges.
Size over time
Typical landscape size 6–9 m (20–30 ft) tall and 7–10 m (23–33 ft) wide; medium growth, about 25 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.25) from the #15 install size.
Bloom
Magenta pink flowers, Mar–Apr (northern-hemisphere months; timing shifts with region and season).

Design notes
- Relatively short-lived (often 20–30 years); plant young and avoid moving established trees.
- Weeping, purple-leaf and gold-leaf cultivars exist — record the cultivar, since sizes differ.
