Yew podocarpus
Podocarpus macrophyllus (Thunb.) Sweet
Also called yew podocarpus, Japanese yew.
Narrow, upright evergreen with strap-shaped needles, used for tall clipped hedges and screens in warm humid regions.
Size over time
Typical landscape size 2.4–6 m (8–20 ft) tall and 1.2–2.4 m (4–8 ft) wide; medium growth, about 6 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.25) from the #3 install size.
Design notes
- Shears well; untrimmed plants become small trees.
- Fruit is toxic to pets.
Regions
Native range: Southern Japan and China.
Not recorded as native to any of the three pilot regions.
Native status describes where the species occurs naturally. It is not a promise that it suits a particular garden; site conditions decide that.
