Dwarf Hinoki cypress
Chamaecyparis obtusa‘Nana Gracilis’ (Siebold & Zucc.) Endl.
Also called dwarf Hinoki cypress.
Slow, irregular dwarf conifer with shell-like sprays of glossy dark green foliage. A refined accent near patios and entries.
Size over time
Typical landscape size 1.8–3 m (6–10 ft) tall and 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft) wide; slow growth, about 10 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.12) from the #3 install size.
Design notes
- Shelter from drying winter wind; inner foliage browns naturally each fall.
- Needs moist, well-drained soil.
Regions
Native range: Japan (species).
Not recorded as native to any of the three pilot regions.
Native status describes where the species occurs naturally. It is not a promise that it suits a particular garden; site conditions decide that.
