Common lantana

Lantana camara L.

Also called common lantana, lantana.

Listed as invasive in FL. The planner flags it (OL-INVASIVE) for sites in those jurisdictions. Details and sources.

Size over time

Typical landscape size 0.9–1.8 m (3–6 ft) tall and 1.2–2.4 m (4–8 ft) wide; fast growth, about 4 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.45) from the #3 install size.

Design notes

  • Listed as a Category I invasive in Florida; use firebush (Hamelia patens) there.
  • Unripe berries and leaves are toxic to people, pets and livestock.
  • In the Southwest it is a common, low-water summer bloomer; cut back in late winter.

Regions

Native range: Tropical Central and South America.

Not recorded as native to any of the three pilot regions.

Native status describes where the species occurs naturally. It is not a promise that it suits a particular garden; site conditions decide that.

Regulated: invasive in FL (Florida Invasive Species Council (formerly FLEPPC) List of Invasive Plant Species). Check your state’s current list before planting.
