Crapemyrtle
Lagerstroemia indica L.
Also called crapemyrtle, crape myrtle.
Southern summer-flowering small tree with long bloom in white, pink, red or lavender and smooth, mottled bark. Many popular selections are L. indica × L. fauriei hybrids.
Size over time
Typical landscape size 4–8 m (13–26 ft) tall and 3–6 m (10–20 ft) wide; fast growth, about 15 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.45) from the #15 install size.
Bloom
Pink flowers, Jun–Sep (northern-hemisphere months; timing shifts with region and season).

Design notes
- Choose a cultivar whose mature height fits the space instead of topping ("crape murder"), which causes weak knuckled growth.
- Mildew-resistant hybrids are the better choice in humid regions.
- Crapemyrtle bark scale is spreading — inspect bark for white felty patches and black sooty mold.
Regions
Native range: China, Korea and Southeast Asia.
Not recorded as native to any of the three pilot regions.
Native status describes where the species occurs naturally. It is not a promise that it suits a particular garden; site conditions decide that.
