Dense, shade-casting European maple once planted widely as a street tree. It seeds heavily into woodlands, where its shade suppresses native understory.

Size over time

Typical landscape size 12–15 m (39–49 ft) tall and 10–14 m (33–46 ft) wide; medium growth, about 25 years to maturity. Intermediate sizes use the planner’s growth curve (k = 0.25) from the BB-2in install size.

Design notes

  • Shallow roots and deep shade make lawn and beds beneath nearly impossible.
  • Substitute red maple, sugar maple, black gum or a native oak.
